Solving “air pollution” problem is not impossible

IUESA: Currently, 70 percent of the world population lives in cities, and it will be reached to 80 percent by next ten years; therefore, urban economy is one of the most important issues that should be considered, Dr. Hossein Mohammadpour Zarandi said.

Considering unsustainable revenues as one of the most important problems of urban communities, he said unfortunately, municipal revenues depend on unsustainable incomes; therefore, creating sustainable revenues is another important issue in urban economy.

Touching upon air pollution in metropolises, he added according to urban economics, the solution is development of public transport system, particularly metro.

 The president of IUESA said, undoubtedly air pollution can be considered as an economic issue that both affect economy and affected by economy.

Noting that investment in metro projects can be influential in reducing air pollution; he said it seems that using this type of transportation is inevitable.

Adding that one of the most important factors affecting cities’ structure has been transportation, but it has changed into one of the main urbanization problems by expanding types of transport system and increasing demographic changes.

Saying that any planning for cities should be in sustainable development framework, he further said transport is an important and determining parameter in all urban aspects.  

Given socio-economic conditions of large cities, any accurate planning and investment for improvement of public transport system affects cities’ transport performance significantly, he said.

The president of Iran Urban Economics Scientific Association said: the most effective method to combat against air pollution, as the most important problem of Tehran, is development of public transport, particularly metro.
